Color Block: Radical Kinship Un-conference (Stolzenhagen)

....

Color Block is a space held by and created for people of color* to work, play, and experiment around performance, improvisation and activism, hosted by Joy Mariama Smith. We aim to collectively and collaboratively focus on perseverance, resistance, freedom and healing.

How do we, as movement practitioners, train and strengthen the mind and body for healing in resistance to oppressive structures and systems? How can we strengthen and support each other through a more engaged practice? How can we utilize personal narratives to celebrate our differences, to resist isolation, and to build community? We will move, make, reflect, rest, heal, discuss, break-bread, question and explore.

This year is Color Block’s 5th anniversary!

An un-conference is any event where the agenda is set by those who attend. The rules of an un-conference are simple: ditch expectation and don’t try to control the experience. This un-conference takes place in a physical space, but a virtual space may emerge…

The Radical Kinship Un-conference is a wild card carefully curated, but not rigidly planned un-conference with lovely people that will catalyze conversations actions, talks, workshops, walks, rest, and more around the many shapes and sizes and notions around the concept of ‘radical kinship’ with a strong focus on self love/self-care. Meaning, how we work, play, eat, live, together… or separate. Autonomy vs collectivity. Equity vs equality. Intersectionality?, confusion, love, desire, hierarchy, power, money…commodification, politics, sustainability … all the juicey stuff. Bring whatever you bring. We work from our collective knowledge together. ALL WELCOME!

The Radical Kinship Un-conference is hosted by Zwoisy Mears-Clarke and Joy Mariama Smith, and catalyzed by Ahmed El Gendy, Melmuun Bajarchuu, Maria Scaroni,  and Season Butler. Read more about how to run an un-conference here.

* Defined as those who have the following descent (through one or more parents) — African, Asian, Middle Eastern, Latinx, Indigenous peoples of Australasia, the Americas, the Caribbean, Indian Pacific, Sami, Roma, Sinti and Travellers. We explicitly welcome and invite mixed-race people. We recognize that the experience of racism, colorism and anti-black discrimination can vary depending on context and culture, for this reason this is a working definition of ‘people of color’ with the aim to be the most inclusive. Talk to us about it. We are using ‘people of color’ is as a political term, and as a term that allows for a more complex set of identities for the individual, and one that is in constant flux.
