ROAR-Berlin Lecture (Berlin)

….

In the context of ROAR’s lecture series, I am giving a lecture titled “Sensitizing Shame, Rage and Fear with Collective, Physical Movement” to the students of the program.

I will introduce my most recently developed non-visual dance practice of collective emotional processing. It involves accessing emotions (specifically fear, shame, or rage) through memory or reflection, bringing them to the surface of the body, expressing them with the language of movement, and having their movement be physically listened to by another person. This practice was created in response to considering the following questions: For whom, including yourself, do you choose to bear witness to their emotional distress that is generated by living in today's racialized, neo-colonial society of Germany—microaggressions and othering are a part of this consideration? How does that work as a filter to create habits around which persons, feelings, and perspectives we give and don't give space to? Finally, in the moments of relating to someone else's emotional distress, what are the different ways of listening or giving support?
